The opportunities of idents 2A

Encouragement of Brand Loyalty

Brand Loyalty is the unspoken promise that, a consumer will continue to buy or use a particular product or service. It can be said that "brand loyalty" is a trend or pattern in which a consumer will become committed to a particular brand or service and make repeat purchases from the same brand or service over time. Brand loyalty for television channel branding is very important. The general aim of a television channel is to build a bigger audience, this means increasing a channel's audience share. If a channel has a wider audience,it means that it is more likely to attract "loyal" consumers. Loyal consumers, lead to increases in audience share, which in turn leads to more revenue. It is for this reason that brand loyalty is so important. Television channels use their brand identity to encourage brand loyalty. This is done through the creation of idents. Idents help to promote and endorse a TV channel. TV channels will normally air programmes that are exclusive to that particular channel to try and keep their ratings.

As mentioned before, the aim of a TV channel is to obtain as many viewers as possible to become the biggest TV channel regionally, nationally or even internationally. Exclusivity is one of the most effective ways of creating brand loyalty. One example of a channel that uses this is Cartoon Network.Cartoon Network has exclusive broadcasting  rights to the Adventure Time animated TV series .Cartoon Network is also the main distributor and production company for Adventure. Essentially, they own the adventure time franchise. This automatically creates brand loyalty for Cartoon Network. Fans of the show (Consumers/Viewers) are forced to watch Cartoon Network, because they will only be able to watch full TV episodes on Cartoon Network. No other TV channel has the rights to broadcast this particular show. Television channels will often highlight the fact that they have exclusive content by incorporating that content in an ident. This ident is typically placed in between and after commercial breaks. The Cartoon Network ident below is an example of this. Adventure Time characters are used in this particular ident to promote the exclusivity of the show on Cartoon Network. The ident also includes the logo of the TV channel, aswell as the instrumental  theme song of Adventure time. This encourages brand loyalty, because viewers will know that adventure time is only shown on Cartoon Network. Viewers will be encouraged to continue watching Cartoon Network because they will want to watch shows that are similar to adventure time.

To effectively encourage Brand Loyalty, TV channels ensure that the content of their channel appeals to the audience. This is done by understanding what the demographic of the channel is and how the content of the channel is consumed.

Creation of corporate identity/Channel branding and identity

A channel's corporate identity or brand is the way in which a channel is perceived by consumers. A brand is a recognisable idea or image of a specific product or service that consumers can connect with. This is often done by identifying the name, logo, slogan, or design of the channel who owns the idea or image. The identity and brand of a channel is often made up of characteristics that define that particular channel. Successful branding can tell consumers the type of content a channel provides.  A corporate identity creates independence for a TV channel. As i explained before, branding and identity are made from the characteristics of the content shown on a particular channel. This makes it easier for consumers to know what the channel consists of. The components of a brand (name, logo, tone, slogan, design) are created by a television channel to reflect the value the company is trying to bring to the market and to appeal to its customers/consumers. In a way, Branding and corporate identity is all about visual communication. The way in which a channel communicates with its audience. This is why, establishing a strong visual corporate identity that connects with consumers is crucial to success. A channel without a unique brand and visual identity is less likely to gain a wider audience share. The ident below is an example of an ident used to create corporate identity. For example BBC one's idents are recognisable because of their corporate image of circles. The ident below shows this. The circle within the ident represents the BBC's image of being connected with the world.

.

Branding of content

An Ident can be used to identify particular content or programmes that belong to a TV channel. Branding of content is essentially associating the brand of a TV channel with the content in which the TV channel provides. Most television channels incorporate footage of a specific programme into their Idents to tell the viewer that this programme belongs to this channel. In a way, Branding of content links to brand loyalty and identity. This sky sports super sunday ident is an example of an ident used for branding. As the name would suggest, Sky sports 1 primarily provides content that relates to sport, specifically English football. The ident is telling the audience what channel they are watching and what type of content to expect from the channel. By including actual footage of a sunday match in the ident, sky sports are branding "super sunday".

Appeal to target audience

Idents must appeal to the target audience in a pleasant and persuasive form so that the viewers do not become deterred from watching the channel but persuaded to stay on the channel for longer. Idents must have a target audience so that the TV channel has something solid to focus on,but at the same time reflect  the different genre of  programmes in which that channel airs. One example where an Ident would appeal to the target audience is Nick. The Nick ident below, uses footage of children playing with toys and animated colours and characters, with happy cheerful music as Nick is a dedicated children channel.  Bright colours and simple typography is something that is often associated with children.   So having an Ident that shows all of these, will definitely appeal to Nick's target audience.

Creation of tone

TV channels need to ensure that their idents give off the right tone and message  towards the audience, and that the image the audience associates the channel with is pleasant. TV channels also need to make sure the Idents link to the type of programmes they air.
The tone in which TV channels chose to create are  based around the types of programmes and shows they air along. The target audience is also a factor that TV channels must consider. For example, BBC one is branded as a channel that brings people together. The whole BBC brand is about diversity and being connected. The BBC one ident below helps to create this tone for its channel. As you can see, different types of people are dancing together. The reinforces the tone of unity and diversity.

Purposes and Design of TV idents Task 1b

An Ident is a short motion graphic animation sequence that is used by Television channels to brand and identify themselves. Idents often help to create visual communication between the channel and the viewer. For example, Idents visually help viewers to identity the channel they are currently watching. This often done by including visual representations of the content in which the channel provides. Some television channel do this by combining both camera footage and animation.

Purpose

Identity: Branding

Television idents can serve many different purposes. As stated before, Television idents are created, firstly, with the purpose of giving the channel an identity in order for the specific channel to stand out from all the others. This is done in the hope of attracting more viewers. This is connected to the importance and purpose of branding through the use of television idents. Idents are designed in a specific way that represents the specific television channel. This is because  short, unique and creative idents are designed to incorporate everything  that the television channel represents and what it wants to portrays itself as to the audience. It is for this reason that idents are designed with specific colours and graphic visualisations in mind. All of these factors, ultimately represent the channel’s identity, and also suggest to the audience the kind of programmes they can find on this television channel. The ident below is an example of an ident which serves the purpose of branding the TV channel.

Funimation Channel ident

This is the 2012 ident for Funimation Entertainment TV. As you can see, the purpose of this ident is to create an identity for the channel. The ident uses both 2D parallax animation and CGI animation. Funimation is known for broadcasting English dubbed and subbed Japanese anime shows. They also broadcast live action Japanese shows and Western cartoons. The content that Funimation provides is mostly anime related and is aimed at teens and young adults. This is reflected in the ident, as you can see animated speech bubbles and various Anime iconography and conventions (0:02- 0:04). This creates interaction between the audience, because the audience in which the channel is aimed at, will be able to easily know the type of content the channel provides. This ident reinforces the identity/brand and tone of Funimation, which is about having fun and immersing yourself in fictional world. The fact that the ident starts off with the logo in space, further solidifies this point. The ident itself, uses a variety of colours. The main colours that are used are black, white, purple and blue. Black and white is the main colour scheme that funimation uses to brand their channel. It is also the colour of the funimation logo. This suggests that these specific colours were used in the ident for brand identity purposes. Purple and blue are also used. in Japanese culture, Bright, neon colours are typically used to create hyper-realism. Colours such as Blue and purple in Japanese culture, represent adventure, enthusiasm and energy. These colours were used to create and reinforce the tone of the channel. The colours were also used to represent the cultural aspects of the channel.

The ident includes the logo of the TV channel,it also includes the slogan "You should be watching". The background music creates a Sci-fi feeling. This further reinforces the notion that  Funimation wants the audience to "immerse" themselves in a fictional world of anime. The tempo of the ident is quite fast and there are a lot of effects and fast transitions that are added onto the funimation logo. It is also important to note the duration (Time) of the ident, which is 7 seconds. It can be argued that the tempo and duration of the ident, has been specifically made to be fast paced and short to keep the attention of the viewers, who are likely teens and young adults. This is because teenagers are known to be easily distracted. The tempo, duration and density of information of the ident suggests that it is entertainment led. Short idents are more likely to be used to catch the attention of the viewer rather than to give the viewer information.

Sky Sports 1 ident 2015

This sky sports 1 ident is another example of an ident used for branding. As the name would suggest, Sky sports 1 primarily provides content that relates to sport, specifically English football. The ident is telling the audience what channel they are watching and what type of content to expect from the channel. The fact that the sky sports 1 logo is shown, within the ident, further reinforces this idea. The voice-over in the ident also says "home of football" (0:07) which tells the audience that the channel is about football. The colours of the logo, Red and Blue, connotes the idea that the channel represents UK sport. Red and blue are colours that have long been associated with the UK. The tempo of the ident is very slow. This has been done to highlight the importance of the moment that is shown in the ident. The ident shows the losing spurs team in a huddle, strategising in the EFL cup semi finals. Team huddles are often seen as iconic and memorable moments to fans. This gives the channel a intense tone. The sky sports logo has been positioned in the middle of the screen, to grab the attention of the viewer. It has also been done to remind the audience of the channel they are watching. The logo also fades in slowly, to intensify the team huddle moment. The Duration (Time) of the ident is 17 seconds. Because the purpose of the ident is to remind the audience of the channel, it is very short. The ident is information-led, because there is a voice-over, telling the audience what they are currently watching. The ident creates interaction with the audience, by using the sky sports logo, which is recognisable to them.

Purpose

Marketing

Another purpose of television idents is for marketing. By creating an ident, a television channel can than place these at the starts and ends of television programmes, as well as during the advertisement breaks. This is a marketing technique that can be used by television channels, to help remind the viewer about what channel they are watching, but to also advertise the identity and branding of the channel to their current audience. This is because the branding and identity, represented through their ident, may appeal to the viewer, and this will therefore result in the viewer most likely returning to the channel to watch other programmes because they like the identity of the channel, and will most likely like the types of programmes they air too. Also, television idents can be especially useful when a channel is airing a very popular programme, and the ident will tell the audience what channel they are watching, because it is possible that many people may have turned onto a specific channel to watch a specific programme. This provides the television channel with a great opportunity to advertise and market this specific programme to a large, and most likely diverse, audience. This allows the audience to  become familiar with the channel and its’ branding, and are therefore more likely to watch the television channel more frequently. The ident below is an example of a ident used for marketing purposes.

Sky Cinema ident (Stars wars: Force Awakens promo/ marathon) 2015

Sky Cinema is a channel that airs blockbuster films. Therefore, most of the content that is shown on sky cinema is related to movies. This particular ident is promoting the star wars film franchise. It is also promoting the partnership between Sky and Disney (Who own lucusfilms and star wars) The ident uses clips from different star wars movies and inserts them into the sky cinema logo. This is done to tell the audience what channel they are watching and what content to expect. The tempo and speed of the ident is slowed down to draw the audience's attention to the movie clips. The clips within the logo are the most important part of the ident. This is because they are recognisable and they tell the audience straight away what to expect. Doing this creates interaction with the audience. The ident does not add any specific colours. However, the ident uses clips from different star wars movies that include the colours red and blue. This could relate to the fact that Sky's uses red and blue to brand their channels. Sky Cinema is also a UK channel. As stated before, Red and Blue are colours that represent UK.

Towards the end of the ident, the stars wars theme can be heard (0:20) and the stars wars logo is merged with the sky cinema logo. This highlights the Sky and Stars Wars marketing partnership.to the audience. The reveal of the actual logo is quite cinematic. This is done to convey the tone of the channel. The duration (time) of the ident is 30 seconds.Like the sky sports 1 ident above, the logo in this ident is placed in the middle of the screen. The positioning of the ident draws the audience's attention. In terms of density of information within the ident, There is a lot of visual content. The visual content used (movie clips and logo) are so recognisble to the audience that a voice-over isn't used within the ident to tell the audience what they are watching. This is something that can be linked to Sky's branding. The ident itself is entertainment-led but gives the audience information using visual communication. The Logo reveal at the end visually tells the audience that they are watching sky cinema.

Purpose

Scheduling: Segmentation within scheduling

Another, and final, main purpose of television idents is for them to help form the scheduling, and segmentation within scheduling of the specific television channel. The design of the ident represents the identity and branding of the channel, and therefore the types of programmes it shows on the channel. This helps to create the kind of scheduling the television channel will have by the ident representing the kind of programmes the channel will show to the audience. However, the scheduling and segmentation within scheduling is usually created in an ident via the voice-over. This voice-over informs the audience of what programmes are coming up soon and, for example, the voice-over may also announce whether the channel has any new programmes coming onto the channel, and the voice-over will help influence the audience to watch such things by announcing the times and dates of such shows in order to keep the audience aware of the scheduling and segmentation within scheduling through the voice-over of the ident, and this will also hopefully advertise the channel and its’ programmes even more.

Therefore, it is extremely important that a television ident serves all of its purposes, in order to make the television channel and its’ programmes more successful. The ident below is an example of an ident used for scheduling and segmentation.

Film 4 stairs ident (Thriller)  2014

This is an ident for Film 4; the channel produces contents aimed at teens, young adults and adults .The channel content mainly consists of  films. Film 4 uses a suite of idents. A suite of idents are idents that all have a similar theme that links them together. Having a single theme helps to maintain/brand identity, which is useful because it's less complex than having a lot of themes. In the case of film 4, each ident includes the logo and reflects the genre of the film that the viewer is about to watch. This is done by using a typical location and prop that a particular genre would use. For example, the location used in this ident above, is a location that one would typically see in a thriller movie. Not only does this ident reflect the genre of film that the audience is about to watch, it also reflects the content and theme of the actual channel (Brand identity). The ident is moving as if it is a strip of celluloid film. Celluloid film is widely recognised as a symbol or iconography for the film industry and films in general. Therefore, having a ident move in such a way, only reinforces the idea that this channel's identity is about films. In a way, it can be argued that this ident shares a similar purpose to the funimation ident, in that they both visually convey the identity of the channel. However, this particular ident differs in the fact that it is being used for segmentation of the schedule. The duration (Time) (30 seconds) of the ident further solidify this notion. The on-screen tempo of the ident starts off slow and then builds up quickly (0:06), Almost like a Celluloid film animation. As mentioned, before the ident itself, has characteristics of a Celluloid film strip. This again, puts emphasis on the tone of Film 4 as a TV channel.

The positioning (space and time) and colour of the film 4 logo is important as well. At the beginning of the ident, the logo does not appear. However, as the ident starts to move (0:05) the logo begins to appear. Again, this is something that relates back to the Celluloid film strip concept of the ident. The position in which the logo is placed, allows it to catch the attention of the audience. It is placed in the center, which is known as the "natural field of view".The only colour that is prominent in the ident is red. Similarly to Funimation and BBC One, the Film 4 ident incorporates it's brand colours. Red is the colour that film 4 uses to brand their channel. This ident is information led, rather than entertainment led. This is because the ident includes a voice-over which is providing segmentation within the scheduling of the channel. The density of information on screen isn't that much. The reason for this could be because of the voice-over. The voice-over already tells the audience what is coming up next. There's also the fact that the ident itself, uses visual communication to tell the audience what they are about to watch.

Purpose

Marketing: Packaging and Repackaging

Television idents are also created for the purpose of packaging and repackaging the channel. For example: if there is a change in the branding, identity or even the types of programmes a specific television channel shows, idents can be used to symbolise a change in such things to the audience because idents can be reasonably quickly made to represent the new identity, branding and new programmes that a television channel my now be showing. Television idents therefore have an important role in packing or repackaging a channel and what they represent, by simply changing or altering the channel’s idents.  Television idents are also used for packaging and repackaging the channel depending on the time of the year. A television channel may have one main ident, but they will then repackage this and create an ident similar to the original ident but just slightly different so that it suits a certain time of theme. For example: an television channel may want to create a specific Christmas ident that is shown on their channel over the Christmas period and between Christmas television programmes. The graphic designers who create the ident will then take the main original ident and repackage it a little so that it incorporates some Christmas themes. Therefore, the audience will still be able to identify what channel they are watching it because it has some of the same elements of the original ident, but then they will also be able to tell that its Christmas and that this channel probably has a Christmas themed schedule with Christmas themed television programmes due to the additional Christmas elements that have been added in order to repackage the ident. The ident below is an example of repackaging.

BBC One ident

This BBC one ident is important because the ident focuses more on the visual representation  which encourages brand loyalty and which idents do currently. whereas before idents would just have simple text and display the name of the channel.  Branding is important because the channel can sum up the whole personality of the ident.

The limitations of idents 2B

Typography

Sometimes in an ident, Typography can be a limitation. For example, the logo used for an ident has to be readable, easy to understand. The typography used for the logo has to create or convey the brand identity of its channel. It has to appeal to the target audience of the channel. Ident creators also have to take into consideration  the footage that is applied to the Ident, as the colours used within the footage  cannot be too bright, as the text upon the Idents could become hard to read. The font style, size, spacing and alignment within a TV channel's Ident matter. As mentioned before, typography on idents needs to be clear to the viewers. If the audience cannot read the typography, problems could arise and the audience can become annoyed and deterred from watching a particular TV channel. This is because the audience is struggling to read the text displayed on screen or is finding it unpleasant to view due to the colours used for both the text and the background.  The logo used in an ident has to also be recognisable. For example, the BBC three ident below only shows the text "THERE". This can be confusing to some viewers because the ident does not show the BBC logo,so the audience does not know if they are watching BBC three or another channel called three.

Colour

The colour limitations in which are presented towards Ident designers are focused around whether the audience members can Identify what the footage is and whether they can read the text on screen with ease but this all depends on the target audience as the young era target audience the more flexible and dynamic the Ident designers can be with the Idents production. Take the FX Idents for example for comparison against the BBC One, all of the footage within each of the BBC One Idents are easily Identifiable as something natural, man-made or a combination of both with very little colour balance applied to the footage to give off a non-edited image towards the audience members and to give a natural light effect, applying this allows for easy reading of the bold white text they use within their logo which is nearly always centred upon the Idents. This clearly comes across as Idents that are aimed at a much larger array of target audience members due to the clarity of the Idents in which people of all ages and visual impairments should. Be able to Identify as a BBC One Ident, and not only from the narrator stating so unless the impairments were severe.Colours can also provide different connotations.  For example the ident below is branded with red. This could represent danger. ThIs could be a potential issue for tv channels, because the channel is not being branded in the way it is meant to.

Size

The size of an Ident reflects straight back to resolution of an Ident in the sense of its physical size onscreen and how detailed the image is towards the audience member. With this subheading I am going to go straight to the point on its limitations in which I feel are the exact same as the resolution limitations which is that Ident designers are outputting sizes for Ultrahigh definitions TVs which very few people around the world have and overall wasting time for them selves and the TV channels they are working for. Despite it is not the actual designers was time but more or less the clients (CEOs and other high ranking operators of the TV channels) who are giving orders to the designers to output the Idents in sizes that are barley ever used by consumers due to the technology not being within affordable price ranges at this point in time.Other than the points previously stated there are very limited limitations of size with TV Idents as long as the resolutions that they captured it (if footage based) are high enough to reach 1080P but most professional studio cameras of today can record in much higher sizes and resolutions than the very popular resolution of 1080P .But as very few people around the world have ultra-high definition TVs the rendering of those sizes are what see as currently pointless.

Aspect Ratio and Resolution

Aspect ratio refers to the ratio of the width to the height of the image or screen within a TV channel ident. Aspect ratio overall, limits the resolution of the Idents that are produced. Ident designers are limited to the resolutions given to them via the TV channel company. They must conform to the given resolutions that reflect a specific aspect ratio, if the designer does not render the Idents to the specific resolutions given this could create a draw back for the deadline date set by the client which could potentially limit what Idents are aired on TV, The TV channel will be forced to crop the ident to a suitable ratio, which could affect significant details within the ident. Ident designers must also consider the different types of aspect ratios that are used for TV. 16.9 is the aspect ratio that must TV use nowadays. This is because this ratio looks more natural to the human eye.

The limitations in which designers face with the resolutions they have to render each of the Idents in revolves around how most people only have High Definition TVs up to 1080P and no further, with very few people to date owning Ultra high Definition TVs so the limitations here are more on the consumer end as Idents are also rendered in Ultra High definition but they cannot view them due to their TVs only being High definition compatible and not further so for the designers it is more of a time waster for them as they are most likely waiting hours on end for Idents to render in Ultra high definition resolutions but in the end will most likely only be viewed very few times.

Television Ident Prep Work

Task 1

Channel branding and identity: A channel's identity or brand is the way in which a channel is perceived by consumers. A brand is a recognisable idea or image of a specific product or service that consumers can connect with. This is often done by identifying the name, logo, slogan, or design of the channel who owns the idea or image. The identity and brand of a channel is often made up of characteristics that define that particular channel. For example, if the identity of a channel is comedic and humorous, the branding for said channel might use a bright colour scheme and a funny slogan. This is because brighter colours tend to represent joy and laughter. Comedy is something that brings joy to people. Successful branding can tell consumers the genre of the channel. As i explained before, branding and identity are made from the characteristics of the content shown on a particular channel. This makes it easier for consumers to know the genre of the channel. The components of a brand (name, logo, tone, slogan, design) are created by a company to reflect the value the company is trying to bring to the market and to appeal to its customers/consumers. In a way, Branding and identity is all about visual communication. The way in which a channel communicates with its audience. This is why, establishing a strong visual identity that connects with consumers is crucial to success. A channel without  a unique brand and visual identity is less likely to gain a wider audience share.

Brand Loyalty: Brand Loyalty is the unspoken promise that, a consumer will continue to buy or use a particular product or service. It can be said that "brand loyalty" is a trend or pattern in which a consumer will become committed to a particular brand or service and make repeat purchases from the same brand or service over time. Brand loyalty for television branding is very important.

Segmentation: This is the process of breaking down or dividing the areas of marketing into parts, for a particular company. There are a number of reasons why segmentation is used, especially for Television companies and services. One of the main reasons segmentation is used is to find a "desirable" audience. No matter how popular a TV channel may be, It is still very difficult to provide content that targets everyone. This is because of time, cost and effort restrictions. In order to be successful,a Television channel needs to have a 'desirable' segment or audience. This is a mass of people who can be identified and targeted with reasonable effort, cost and time.

Re-branding a channel:  Re-branding is the process of changing the image of a company or TV channel. Essentially, Rebranding is the creation of a new look and feel for an established product or service. a complete overhaul of the corporate image. The usual aim of rebranding a TV channel is to influence a consumer's perception about the channel's content. This is done by rejuvenating the brand and making it seem more modern and relevant to the consumer's needs.

Task 2

ident 1: (Funimation Entertainment)

This is the 2012 ident for the Funimation Entertainment Channel. The ident uses both 2D parallax animation and CGI animation. Funimation is known for broadcasting English dubbed and subbed anime shows. They also broadcast live action Japanese shows and Western cartoons. The content that Funimation provides is mostly anime related and is aimed at teens and young adults. This is reflected in the ident, as you can see animated speech bubbles and various Anime iconography and conventions. This ident reinforces the brand and identity of Funimation, which is about having fun and immersing yourself in fictional world. The fact that the ident starts off with the logo in space, further solidifies this point. The ident includes the logo of the TV channel,it also includes the slogan "You should be watching". The background music creates a Sci-fi feeling. This further reinforces the notion that  Funimation wants the audience to "immerse" themselves in a fictional world of anime.

Ident 2: (Channel 4)

This is the ident for channel 4. The channel’s new idents demonstrate an innovative new take on the Channel 4 logo. 4 Creative collaborated with Academy Films (opens in a new window) who produced this part of the project. Director Jonathan Glazer (opens in a new window) (Under the Skin, Guinness ‘Surfer’, Sony ‘Paint’) took the original brief and crafted a story, writing and directing the set of films; a four-part narrative that is to be continued. Globally renowned graphic designer Neville Brody (opens in a new window) (The Times London, Yamaha, Christian Dior, Samsung, Converse, GAP, Nike, Royal College of Art) was commissioned to cut two exclusive new typefaces for Channel 4 named Horseferry (for display) and Chadwick (for information). These can be seen as part of the channel’s refreshed on-screen graphics (e.g. end of programme credit panels, branded stings, menu information graphics and programme title cards) as well as its bold new off-air/poster art direction.

The new on screen identity for Channel 4 will be visible across programme brands that currently incorporate the channel’s branding including Channel 4 Racing and Channel 4 News – for which a brand new title sequence launches on Wednesday 30th September.Mica Levi, and The Shapes, (Under the Skin) composed the music to the idents. She is currently an Artist in Residence at London's Southbank Centre.
At the same time as refreshing the identity of the main linear channel, Channel 4 is introducing an updated corporate brand to reflect the whole network of channels and services it delivers. This brand identity uses the new multi-coloured 4 logo reflecting all the channel brands which was first introduced to launch All 4. This will now be used on all corporate and network branding. The name of the corporation will remain Channel 4 Television Corporation.

James Walker, Head of Marketing, Channel 4 said: “Channel 4’s main channel identity has been running for ten years and has been hugely successful. This ground breaking brand refresh pushes it forward once more, reflecting our public service remit to be diverse, challenging and innovative.”Chris Bovill and John Allison, Heads of 4 Creative said: “Most TV branding these days is like watching wallpaper. It’s pleasant but gets boring very quickly.
However, Channel 4 is much more than just a big shiny number and some nice vibes.
We didn’t want to tell people what channel they’re watching. We wanted to tell them why they’re watching it the first place. They watch because Channel 4 stands for something important. We wanted the new branding to reflect this.

Ident 3: (Film 4)

This is an ident for Film 4; the channel produces contents aimed at teens, young adults and adults .The channel mainly broadcasts films. For example, the location used in the ident above, is a location that one would typically see in a thriller/spy movie. Not only does this ident reflect the genre of film, it also reflects the content and theme of the actual channel. The ident is moving as if it is a strip of celluloid film. Celluloid film is widely recognised as a symbol or iconography for the film industry. Therefore, having a ident move in such a way, only reinforces the idea that this channel is about films.

This tells the viewer who is watching this channel, that he/she is about to watch a thriller film. each ident there is a multi-coloured robot, all the robots are dancing to energetic music or doing active things like kicking a beach ball. It basically sums up what teenagers enjoy doing, having a good time with friends. All of the robots in the ident are interacting with the T4 logo. The personality of each robot is enhanced through the costume design, choreography and how they act towards the new 3D logo. The overall framing of this ident is very well composed and established. There’s a lot of movement included in this ident both from the animated robots and the logo itself. Each ident background is very pale and basic but this helps to draw the eye towards the action within the ident. This ident last for 34 seconds at an upbeat, snappy pace which contrasts very well with the fast movement from each dancing robot. This ident is well suited for young adults (16-25 year olds) because of the vibrant vibe throughout. The fluffy clouds that frame the edge of the shot makes it feel as if you’re falling into a dream. This ident is a really fantastic way of enforcing the company title. For a start the saying "you've got your head in the clouds" is said when you completely zone out and start to day dream. I think by putting the clouds on here that's the effect they are going for. The crescent moon with the boy sat on the edge fishing clearly displays a dream sequence and that you can do anything you want to in your dreams.

Ident 4: (Sky Sports Christmas ident)

Ident 5: (E4  ident)

This is an ident for E4; the channel produces contents aimed at young adults. It broadcasts show information, celebrity gossip, shopping and a text message service. In each ident there is a purple flood. all the robots are dancing to energetic music or doing active things like kicking a beach ball. It basically sums up what teenagers enjoy doing, having a good time with friends. All of the robots in the ident are interacting with the E4 logo. The personality of each robot is enhanced through the costume design, choreography and how they act towards the new 3D logo. The overall framing of this ident is very well composed and established. Ident 6: (BBC One ident)

This BBC one ident is aired throughout the year but being aired in winter interacts with the audience by getting them excited for the approaching summer season. The stop motion animation naturally appeals to a younger audience. The colour of the logo creates brand loyalty. This is because the colour of it is shown throughout the ident and establishes the channel and its themes. In addition to this, the logo is incorporated various times throughout the ident in different forms, but ultimately, even when the logo is made out of popcorn in conjunction with the theme of summer and the beach and enjoyment, there is still the presence of the colour purple in the background, which means it doesn’t lose its identity and audiences can still distinguish the channel. Although the content of the ident may seem randomly compiled, in actual fact, it is not. Each of the subjects represent BBC in the way that it broadcasts a wide range of programmes but is most well known for entertainment. This is conveyed when one of the teddies in the slow-moving boat sailing in the sand is pulled into the sand from the fishing rod. This is entertaining, which suggests that the ident is entertainment led. The ident begins with 3 beach huts with primary-coloured doors.

This suggests that the channels content can be classed into 3 sections i.e. subcategories of entertainment such as: Comedy, Drama and Documentaries. Within this ident, it could be interpreted that the busy content attempts to make the audience aware of the channel content, thus encouraging brand loyalty by making this activity and excitement familiar with the audience and finally influencing the audience’s purchasing power. Typically, the use of particular objects or colours result in an association with the meaning of them or what they are intending to represent. The audio in the background is catchy and sets a light-hearted and fun tone, causing the audience to be more interested in the channel.

The ident is 21 seconds in duration an the density of information is quite heavy but being conveyed in visuals, it doesn’t actually feel that way. Being less than 30 seconds long, it works well to keep the younger target audience interested for just about the right amount of time and conveys the information in an entertaining form. If the objects are representative of the variety of programmes on BBC that are all entertainment related (as if the beach is the metaphor for the entertainment and the fact that all the objects are all in this one location on the beach) then the information is portrayed concisely, albeit with a busy screen, in an appealing way.

Task 3

Task 4

Idents

An Ident is a short motion graphic animation sequence that is used by Television and Television streaming channels to brand and identify themselves. Idents often help to create visual communication between the channel/company and the consumer. For example, Idents visually help viewers to identity the channel they are currently watching. This done by including visual representations of the content in which the channel provides. Some television channel do this by combining both camera footage and animation.
Television idents are created, firstly, with the purpose of giving the channel an identity in order for the specific channel to stand out from all others, in the hope of attracting more viewers. This is linked to the importance and purpose of branding through the use of television idents. Idents are designed in a specific way that represents the specific television channel. This is because the short, creative idents are designed to incorporate everything thing that the television channel embodies and what it wants to portrays itself as to the audience. The ident is designed with specific colours, objects, etc. in mind that ultimately represent the channel’s identity, and also suggest to the audience the kind of programmes they can find on this television channel.

Another purpose of television idents is for marketing purposes. By creating an ident, a television channel can than place these at the starts and ends of television programmes, as well as during the advert breaks. This is a marketing technique that can be used by television channels, firstly, to help remind the viewer about what channel they are watching, but to also advertise the identity and branding of the channel to their current audience. This is because the branding and identity, represented through their ident, may appeal to the viwer, and this will therefore result in the viewer most likely returning to the channel to watch other programmes because they like the identity of the channel, and will most likely like the types of programmes they air too. Also, television idents can be especially useful when the channel is siring a very popular programme, and the ident will ultimately make the audience realise what channel they are watching, because it is possible that many may have just turned onto this channel to watch the specific programme, and this give the television channel a great window of opportunity to advertise and market their channel to a large, and most likely diverse, current audience. This would all hopefully mean that more people become familiar with the channel and its’ branding, and are therefore more likely to watch the specific television channel more frequently.
