Production Diary 3: Pitch to the client and feedback

25th April 2017 3:10pm

Production Video Log/dairy Entry 3- Pitching to the client

Team working and Liaison with the Client

Today we pitched our idea to the client. Before the pitch, we created a production plan to give to the client. During the pitch, we summarised our ident idea. Ugo talked about the visual style and design of the ident. Jordan talked about the Theme and production of the idents. Eunice talked about the Budget of the idents. Me and Kenny talked about the potential problems that could arise during the production. We also talked about the solutions of those problems. The key problems i highlighted were health and safety, overrun of budget, practical skills and resources and scouting of locations.  I think we did well in presenting our final idea to the client.

Preproduction Feedback

Wednesday 26th April 2017 10:00am

Quality management and team working

Today we received feedback for our production plan. Some of our preproduction documentation were in complete or missing. As a result of this we received an NYA grade.
The main issues we needed to fix were to treatment, designs and production schedule (gant chart).

The treatment that was created was not fit for purpose. For the treatment, we needed to include the tone, theme and brand identity of our suite of idents. We also had to talk about the techniques were going to use (e.g- stop motion, animation)
The designs needed to include logo, colour schemes and hand drawn images. The designs also needed to be annotated. This was something we did not do.

The gant chart for our preproduction schedule received a pass grade. To receive higher, we need to add roles and responsibilities to each preproduction task. There were also some incomplete boxes on the gant chart that needed sorting out.

The potential problems and solutions received a pass grade. Some significant potential problems were left out that we needed to address.

-Issues regarding stop motion
-Time and organisation
- Communication

We were also later told that we needed to include a storyboard in our production plan.

Despite having various incomplete tasks, Our budget breakdown was a solid merit. Which to be honest, was surprising to me, considering the amount of problems the production plan had.

Overall, i think we did not work well as a team this week. A lot of our tasks were incomplete and as a result, we had to spend some our production time, improving the pre-production documents.

Meeting Deadlines

We were not able to meet the deadline because our production plan was incomplete.

After the feedback session, an emergency production meeting was set up.

I was annoyed at some of the members of my team for the lack of detail regarding, the preproduction tasks. At various times of the week, I had stated that the preproduction plan looked a bit rushed and not detailed enough, but my words went unheard. I was even told that the preproduction plan had been edited to look more professional, but when I checked it, there were various spelling mistakes. Unfortunately, this was on the day of the pitch, so I could fix very little.

I was also annoyed at the lack of communication between the production team. There were times were no one responded to an important question that I raised in the group chat.

It was agreed upon, that the members of the team that were responsible for incomplete work would compete and improve the work.

Jordan (treatment)
Ugo (designs and storyboard)
Kenny (potential solutions)
Me (Potential problems)
Eunice (Gant chart and Budget)

Production Diary 2: Production team meeting

Wednesday 19th April 9:30am

Quality Management and
Team-working

Today we had a production team meeting. We discussed our initial ideas, theme and branding of our suite of idents.

Our initial ideas were:

-talent show
-art students working
-sports
  • students learning/behind the scenes

We went on to discuss the visual branding of the idents and how the idents would work together to portray the Brand identity of Christ the king. For the sports idea,Jordan suggested that we use footballs to make the "ctk" logo.
I said it was a great idea. However, I was concerned that people outside of the college wouldn't recognise the"ctk" logo,if it were made from footballs.
Jordan was insistent that it wouldn't be a problem, but I was still a bit skeptical.
Ugo, however was able to offer a solution to the problem. He suggested that after the "ctk" letters were made from footballs, the screen could fade to black and the actual ctk logo, could appear.

I liked this idea a lot, I went on to suggest that the background could fade to white, instead of black. White is a part of ctk's colour scheme, so I thought it made a lot of sense. The group seemed to agree with me.

We continued to outline the rest of our ideas. Making rough summaries of them before our meeting with sir. During this process we came to the conclusion that some of our ideas needed tweaking. We had our production meeting with Sir. In this meeting, we talked about our initial ideas and our theme. We as a group, felt that our theme was our weakest part of our ident idea. We were not sure how it related to the rest of our ideas. We made some progress with the theme however. We decided to go with "grit". It seemed appropriate because it was part of the ctk graces. Sir thought likewise, and said he liked the theme. However, as Ugo talked about the rest of our ideas, Sir suggested that we change the theme to "coming to life".
Overall, Sir liked most of our ideas and even suggested a few new ideas. Like having art work come to life.

After the meeting, we went back and agreed to change some of the preproduction documents to reflect our new ideas and theme.

overall, i think we worked well as a team this week. We all contributed to the generation of ideas.

2B (2) (constraints (legal, ethical, regulatory)

Constraints (legal, ethical, regulatory)*; (Copyright, use of under 18s in the video, discrimination of ethnicity, gender, religious belief)

Legal Constraints need to be taken into consideration when creating and distributing a media product. The reason for this is to make sure that all media products that are distributed are not breaking the law. Another reason is to make sure that products are suitable for its intended audience. There are many laws and regulations set by regulators to ensure that media companies and organisations do not offend people. Regarding Ethical issues and constraints, we as a group made sure that our ideas and themes did not offend people's ethnic backgrounds, gender or religious beliefs. We also had to make sure that we did not discriminate against minority groups.

We also have to use actors who are a suitable age. The law states that we cannot include underage children in our production to encourage stereotypes. This Law is part of "The children Performance and activities regulation act".This means that no underage teens will be included in the production.  It is our responsibility as a production team, to make sure our final product fits the terms and criteria of the brief and does not violate any legal constraints. This is because, creating something that differs from the brief, could violate the legal contract between us and the client. It is important that we understand the laws regarding ethical issues. Moral and ethical codes may not be the law, but the way in which ethical & moral issues are handled could potentially affect the outcome of the product and the reputation of the client. This is because our product could represent the client or his organisation in the wrong way. Moral and ethical issues relate to whether or not certain content is “morally right” or suitable to show to the public. Morals are the principles on which one's judgments of right and wrong are based on. One of the most important issues we as a production group need to consider is copyright. We have to make sure that our product does not include any copyright material. And if we use copyright material, we have to show proof of granted permission.

The actors that will feature in our idents, will have to sign release forms. A release form is a legal document that prevents any legal liability between the "releasor" and the actors signed by the "releasor". By signing these forms, the actors will be giving us legal permission to include them in our video production. This is important because without the actors permission, we cannot use them in our production without breaching legal terms. The Broadcasting Act is a law, which was put in place by the British parliament. The Act was created to change and improve British broadcasting, particularly British Radio. The broadcasting Act stops broadcasters from broadcasting inappropriate content. The act is essentially a collection of laws that television and radio producers must abide by. The purpose of the Broadcasting act is to protect people under the age of 18 from viewing inappropriate content. The non- discrimination law refers to the law on the right of people to be treated equally.

Production Diary1- meeting the client

11th April 2017 meeting the client and developing our initial ideas

Team-working and Client negotiation

Today we met the client for the first time. We were able listen to what the client wanted. We as group came up with questions that we would ask him based on both our initial ideas and his preferences. I asked him what brand identity he wanted to portray in these idents. He said he wanted the college to be represented in a positive way. He wanted the brand identity to be recognised by shareholders and parents. He also wanted the idents to acknowledge their catholic ethos. Our group continued to negotiate the brief with the client. As a group, we negotiated the terms of the brief. Jordan negotiated the duration of each individual ident. Eunice and Kenny negotiated the colour scheme with the client. The client said that we could incorporate different colours in the idents, but he wanted purple and white to be included in the idents. Purple and White are colours that represent the college, so he was really set on us including those specific colours in the ident. As a team, I think we worked well in the negotiation of the brief. We were prepared and knew which parts of the brief we wanted to negotiate.

Quality management

After meeting the client, We set up a production team meeting. In this meeting we talked about the ideas for our suite of idents. We discussed the fitness and purpose of our ideas. We made a mind map to plan out our new ideas.

Meeting Deadlines

Although there we were no major deadlines set this week. We were able to meet personal deadlines that we set ourselves as a production team. For example we were able to develop our ident ideas before the following week. This gave us plenty of time to go over the planning, such as locations bookings and equipment. We were also able to test out our ideas, to see if they were realistic enough to work.
