Evaluation of Short Film
During the production of this short film, I have learnt that it is very important to plan as much as it is to organise a production. Planning allows you to resolve potential issues that might arise during the production of the film. As a team, our planning was somewhat decent, however,I felt like we could have prevented some issues that occurred during the production by improving our pre-production documents. Another thing that I have learnt from this experience is the importance of teamwork and effectiveness of communication. As a team, each of us were given certain responsibilities.
Our team was able to complete all the pre-production documents that were needed for the film. Our shooting Schedule was detailed and included all the necessary information such as the shot type and the action that was happening in a certain scene. Although the shooting schedule was detailed, it was somewhat unrealistic. This was because issues such hospital appointments or family commitments were not taken into consideration when planning the schedule. This meant that some members of the team could not be present for the shooting of the film. This also meant that some days of shooting needed to be rescheduled. Days in which we would use to gather extra footage such as pick up shots, were not planned before hand. This ultimately meant that, these days were not included in the shooting schedule. Overall, the shooting schedule allowed us to complete the recording of our film to a good quality.
The storyboard for our film was very detailed and conveyed the idea of our short film well. The person in the team that was responsible for the storyboard was our Camera operator/ Director of cinematography Rosie Hellawell. At first the storyboard was incomplete, so the camera operator had to keep adding and changing things within storyboard. However, In the end, the storyboard was completed.
The shot list was good in terms of planning and following the shots of the film. It included details such as shot type, type of location (Interior and Exterior) and Camera angles. The shot list was comprehensible and very thorough. There isn't much i would change, regarding the shot list.
As Director, i was the person responsible for completing the location Recce and health and Safety pre-production documents. Our producer, Maya Schersmith Meikle, was responsible for scouting the locations that we used for our film. I visited the locations that we were going to use. This was so that i could conduct a risk assessment of the locations. Thanks to the producer, we were able to use the locations we scouted. Our first location was Charlton House, which is located in the Borough of Greenwich. Our second location was a house located in Woolwich. Although we were given permission to use our first location, there were unforeseen complications that limited the amount of time we could use it for. Therefore, we as a crew decided that it was best to use our second location. I would say i did a good job of completing the location Recces. The talent (Actors) for our film were chosen by the producer. I think she did a great job in choosing the actors in our film. The actors were well rehearsed and acted very professionally.
Everyone in the production crew was aware of their role in the production. All the tasks that were set for each role were completed. The producer was in charge of permissions and kit bookings. She made sure that we had the right equipment before we started shooting. She also made sure the equipment was functional Unfortunately, the LED lights that were booked were low on power. So, we were forced to charge the battery before we could use it.Our Producer filled out the call sheets. I think she did her best to add as much detail as possible to the call sheets. Everyone showed up to the shoot on time. Even when we had to reschedule some shoots, everyone still showed up on time.
Overall, i think the management of the production was great. There were somethings we could have done better to improve the quality of the production. For example, Planning. Like i mentioned before, our planning in the beginning of the production process wasn't as good. I feel like planning is the only area i would want us to improve in.
